By choosing to follow Jesus, we take the first step in a lifelong journey. And, at some point, Jesus will ask us, “And what about you? Who do you say that I am?” This week, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus asks Simon Peter, and the other disciples, these questions. At some point, we all must determine who we believe Jesus to be. And everything else in our lives will pivot upon our response. While this is a tough question, answering it truly matters. Peter, who steps out and boldly proclaims, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God,” presents us with the response upon which our confessions should be based.
